I was having a lazy Bank Holiday afternoon and decided to browse Netflix for a Horror movie to watch. For some unexplainable reason, I decided to give Finders Keepers a whirl.
SPOILERS AHEAD.
Finders Keepers is the story of a recently divorced woman, Alyson, and her young daughter, Claire, moving into a creepy-looking house in the countryside. Unbeknownst to them at the time, a multiple-murder had taken place in the property before they moved in. Claire finds an ugly doll in the property and becomes very attached to it. She soon goes from being a pleasant little girl to being withdrawn, angry and spiteful. Various murders start to take place. Is it the evil doll doing this? Has the evil doll possessed the child, and is making her do this stuff?
Hang on a second, does this story sound familiar? Why, yes it does. It's exactly the fucking same story that countless evil doll movies have had. I checked to ensure that it wasn't a remake of something else, because it all felt so ridiculously familiar. Seriously, Finders Keepers is as generic as it gets, and is painfully predicable. There's even the classic scene of throwing the evil doll in the dustbin, only for it to miraculously re-appear in the child's bedroom.
As damning as this sounds, it's still an enjoyable movie. It works for a number of reasons. The cinematography is excellent, and the doll really is sinister to the point that it makes Annabelle look like a Care Bear. The pacing of the movie is really good, and at no point does it feel like it's starting to drag. Most importantly, the actors are first-class and pour heart and soul into these characters. In particular, Jaime Pressly who plays Alyson (I recognised her immediately from the TV show My Name Is Earl and Marilyn Manson's Tainted Love music video), and child actor Kylie Rogers who plays Claire. The doctor in the movie is played by Tobin Bell, better known as Jigsaw from the Saw movies.
Finders Keepers really proves that if you have brilliant actors, the right director and a top production team that you can then make a decent movie out of a shamelessly recycled script.
