Hexenhammer is the second studio album from all-female Heavy Metal band Burning Witches. To be honest, this was my first time listening to their music, and I'm really pleased that I took the time to check them out. Imagine a mix of Sister Sin, Judas Priest, and Accept, then add a sprinkle of Doro with some Venom, and you'll be somewhere close. In other words, if you're looking for 'full-on Heavy Metal', you've come to the right place.

This is a pretty strong record. Burning Witches explore Speed Metal territories with incendiary tracks like Executed and Possession. Other tracks like Lords of War have more of an overall melodic Hard Rock vibe, and there are even some songs with a very prominent Iron Maiden influence, such as Open Your Mind, and the aptly titled Maiden Of Steel.

The title track has some seriously badass, crushing riffing coupled with the mandatory epic chorus, making me immediately think of classic Judas Priest. After that monster, the tongue-in-cheek Metal silliness peaks with Man-Eater, which again reminds me of Judas Priest, and also Alice Cooper. It's great fun, and fantastic Heavy Metal too.

The musicianship is top-notch, with some ace shredding lead guitar solos, soaring vocals and a really tight rhythm section. Burning Witches is a truly great band and they're definitely on my list to check out live as soon as possible.
