Brazil's Semblant have grown in popularity significantly since their superb 2016 record, Lunar Manifesto, and now they've finally released their follow up, Obscura.
This is an awesome Metal record, there's no doubt about that whatsoever. It's as though everything that I loved about Semblant before has been turned up to eleven!
Musically, it's eclectic-yet-cohesive, perfectly blending more traditional forms of Metal with more extreme styles. This is especially true of vocalist, Sergio Mazul, who can effortlessly swap between Death Metal growls, Black Metal shrieks and melodic 'sung' vocals. Alongside the powerful symphonic tones of Mizuho Lin, the two vocalists compliment each other perfectly.
The songs are brilliant and there isn't a single duffer to be found. Everything about this release is first class, from the musicianship to the production. There are elements of Thrash, Death Metal, Power Metal, Black Metal, and Traditional Metal all weaved together to make a multi-layered Metal masterclass.
If I had to choose favourites, I'd go for Murder Of Crows, Mere Shadow, Wallachia, and the heavy rocking Insomnia.
When it comes to this kind of music, Semblant have proven to be a formidable act. Expect them to become a much bigger international band off the back of Obscura.
