I was in a record shop in Barcelona recently, and picked up a few flyers for various gigs and club nights. One of them was a for a Megara and Trece Dias gig due to happen that same day. I hadn't heard of either before, but I was feeling adventurous and decided to go check them out.
Trece Dias (translated: 'Thirteen Days') are from Barcelona, and opened the show with
their own brand of high energy Pop-Punk that was reminiscent of Paramore,
Tonight Alive and a slightly heavier We Are The In Crowd. Along with their
original songs, they threw in covers of Paramore's 'Ain't It Fun' and a rocking
version of Mark Ronson's 'Uptown Funk' (both sung in English perfectly). The
band was slick and professional, and delivered an impressive set. This was a
hometown gig for them, and the enthusiastic response they got from the crowd
showed that they've made a real impact on their local scene.
Madrid's Megara were up next, and the crowd were on fire
from the very start of their set. Over the last few years, we've seen a huge
rise in both the number and quality of female fronted Rock & Metal bands,
with acts such as Halestorm, New Years Day, Marmozets and PVRIS taking their
place as world leaders in Rock music. Megara are Spain's answer to these bands.
Like Trece Dias, Magara sing in their
native tongue, which I'm sure has added to their popularity in Spain. Lead
singer, Kenzy, is a force of nature, and commands the stage with the confidence
and panache of a true Rock Star. The other band members match her onstage with a masteful
performance worthy of a major label act. Their songs are more Hard Rock than
Metal, and are full of hooks and catchy choruses, which the crowd lap up fervently.
Earlier that day I'd never heard of either of
these bands, and by midnight I'd seen them live and picked up a CD &
T-Shirt. My spontaneity really paid off.
